Mandarin and English (Foreign Language) Tuition in Glasgow

As a former school teacher and now a teacher educator, I have extensive experience in planning, developing and reviewing teaching programmes. My expertise lies in my aptitude for teaching, in-depth and broad knowledge about modern foreign languages education, teacher professional learning and digital technologies in education. I also have excellent interpersonal skills and a track record of working with/ lead people from a range of backgrounds.

I have over fifteen years' teaching experience (both in China and in Scotland). I have tutored over 30 students just on FirstTutors! From 2016 to present, I work as a lecturer (assistant professor) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. I am responsible for the teaching and research of both BA and Masters' courses on initial teacher education (both Primary and Secondary) as well as on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

I am originally from Shenyang, northeast of China. I have been living, studying and working in Scotland for almost 10 years now. In my spare time, I enjoy doing sports and outdoor activities, travelling, watching movies and learning new languages! Apart from English and Mandarin, I speak French, German and some Spanish.

Tutoring Experience

I have successful and significant experience of teaching Mandarin at secondary level. During my time as Head of Mandarin (Subject Leader/ Curricular Team Leader) at a secondary school in Edinburgh, I was responsible for the Mandarin courses across all levels (Beginners to Advanced Higher). I took on a lead role in the planning and delivering the Mandarin curriculum (from S1 to S6). I recruited and managed Mandarin assistants, and mentored PGDE students. Among my achievements were: I was the mentor of the recipient of the SQA Outstanding Advanced Higher Mandarin Candidate for Non-native Speakers award; I had an excellent track record of coaching and mentoring the winners of the prestigious HSBC/British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition (the winners of 2011, 2013 and 2015); under my leadership, the Mandarin programme grew from only being offered to two year groups as a third language to being offered from S1 to S6 as a second language; my pupils achieved excellent SQA exam results consistently, and many of them had gone to further their studies at Oxford, Cambridge, SOAS and other top UK universities.

My depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject can be demonstrated by my current roles as the Course Selector and Leader for PGDE Modern Languages (Mandarin) programme at the University of Strathclyde. I was responsible for the design and set up of this programme when I first arrived at Strathclyde. The programme has been running smoothly for the past three years, and all of our graduates have been successful in securing employment in the UK at the end of the PGDE course. My knowledge and skills in language education more broadly can be demonstrated by my role as the Course Director for MSc TESOL and Intercultural Communication. I led the design and set up of this new course in collaboration with colleagues from the School of Humanities. My responsibilities include leading the writing-up of the course proposal for the relevant Faculty and University committees, liaising with academic and professional services colleagues, overseeing the recruitment and the management of students (including international students).

I hold a PhD in Education from the University of Edinburgh funded by the Principal’s Career Development Studentship and Edinburgh Global Overseas Research Scholarship. I also have a Master’s degree (with Distinction) in Education: Language from the University of Edinburgh and a first degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from the prestigious Beijing Foreign Studies University, China. I have gained full registration from the General Teaching Council Scotland.

I am a very experienced language teacher. Whether your learning goal is to travel to the target country for leisure or for business, to pass an exam or just to learn a new language for fun, I am able to adapt the pace, content and depth to suit your needs.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach draws from a wide range of contemporary teaching methods from Communicative Language Teaching, to Task-based Language Learning, to post-method approaches. I always aim to enthuse and engage my students. Not only am I an excellent classroom practitioner, I have also had extensive experience of one-on-one tutoring through both face to face and online settings.
