11+, 13+, National Curriculum, GCSE, IGCSE and IB (MYP and DP) teaching and tutoring experience.
I am a former lawyer who has since changed my career to teaching English at senior secondary level. I am a full time teacher and have worked in leadership positions at a range of schools for 10 years, all related to curriculum and literacy, including Head of English at a top boys school. I am also an experienced senior examiner and Workshop leader for the IB.
I have over 10 years of . My experience is the following:
Currently, I teach and hold a whole-school Leadership role at an independent school outside London teaching GCSE, IGCSE and IBDP English.
2019-2023: Hong Kong - Head of English at Diocesan Boys School- high attaining, selective all-boys school. Highest IB results globally (ranked #1 and #2 past few years). Teach English Literature, English Language and Literature, English B. Tutored IB, National Curriculum and IGCSE.
Other: IB Senior Examiner for five years.
2017-2019: Hong Kong - Teacher of MYP and IBDP English language and Literature in an international private school. (Year 10-13 classes only)
2014-2017: London - Teacher of English in a high-achieving 'Outstanding' school in NW London where the English Dept has a record of 97% (2014/15 results) A*-C in English Language and 100% for Literature. School is 3rd in country for Progress 8.
Other: Progress Leader for Year 8 in English and Head of Behaviour. I was previously the school's Literacy Co-ordinator, focused on improving the literacy levels of students across the school and all Key Stages.
I offer an elite tutoring service one-to-one. I can also teach and accordingly price students in pairs or small groups.
My teaching style encourages students to value their own opinions and to have confidence. Certainly for literature my motto would be 'once you have an opinion, it is valid once you back it up' as I believe that engaging with texts and ideas is the key to doing well. I have a good sense of humour and am patient, but I am also pedantic and have high expectations. My students should become confident and well-trained in assuring accuracy in their work. I am also focused on students acquiring key skills that they can transfer and apply to all texts, something especially important for the upcoming curriculum. I value literacy (spelling and grammar) and homework very much.
