Studying Mathematics and Music at the University of Edinburgh has been an enjoyable and social experience, and through both the courses I have taken within Statistics, Pure and Applied Maths, along with extra-curricular commitments such as presenting an exhibit at the Edinburgh Science Festival, I have experience in how to communicate efficiently and be organised when planning and conducting a lesson. I also am adept at time management and being adaptable through the range of other extra-curricular activities I have partaken in, in particular Music, which will allow me to conduct lessons in a friendly and fun manner. Music is a big interest of mine, and having performed Piano up to Undergraduate standard while completing my university degree, I am able to multitask well and cover students of varying abilities at the same time. Singing in various choirs and acapella groups in the city also means I am confident in my teaching style, which helps to ensure students are taught well. Being involved in a range of different sports ranging from Hockey to Korfball means I can deal with a wide range of scenarios in a professional manner when teaching.

Tutoring Experience

Throughout my Mathematics degree at University, I have had the opportunity to teach classes within Maths Education courses and volunteering as part of the University's Outreach team, meaning I can use these experiences to ensure the tutoring is an engaging experience, as I believe it is important for students to enjoy learning Maths and see its uses in the world in order to understand it best.

This has included teaching Primary school children at schools in Edinburgh, as well as teaching within Maths Circles that are hosted by the University of Edinburgh. I also have an Enhanced DBS certification as a result of these experiences, and am a tutor at MyTutor.

Tutoring Approach

Maths is a brilliant subject with many real-life applications, so I aim to teach students one-on-one in order to prepare them not only for exams, but also to showcase the applications of Mathematics across all facets of life. Over the course of a 1 hour lesson, I will guide students through key areas of the Key Stage 3, GCSEs, National 5s, A Levels and Highers curriculum (11-18 year olds). Students will have a strong say over what is to be covered in the lesson (after all it is for them!). Setting different levels of problems/goals for students to try will ensure the lesson pace can be varied as needed depending on the student's progress, rather than having to keep to a strict schedule.
