Personal Description:

I am an experienced tutor, who has been tutoring as my only occupation for a number of years now. I tutor four foreign languages (although speak some more). I am also a non-practising solicitor and offer law tuition up to degree level. I strongly believe that through learning you can achieve anything.

My focus is really on adult learners (in the case of languages) and university law students/mature students (in the case of law). I also love tutoring couples, family members and friends learning together, as they can often provide support to each other. By way of background information about me, I used to work in a legal background in a law firm advising clients on a variety of legal issues. I however decided that although I enjoyed legal work, I wanted to work for myself and escape the 9 to 5 office culture. It is a dream job for me to teach other people in subjects I love.

Tutoring Experience:

I started offering foreign language and law tuition in 2010 and since then over the years have helped many people to improve their knowledge, confidence and accuracy. I must have thousands of hours of experience tutoring. In the case of languages many of my customers plan to move abroad at some point in the future. Others regularly take holidays abroad or learn for fun. In the case of law, learners sometimes ask me for help with their studies generally or are panicking about upcoming exams. In the case of law I have helped a number of people attending different universities as well as distance learning courses, such as the Open University. Regardless of the subject being tutored, most of my customers come to me for several months or more, although I can help people needing short-term tuition as well.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim during tuition is to help you to achieve the most you can in a relaxed environment. I appreciate the difficulties learners face with all the subjects I offer and try to explain sometimes complicated concepts in plain English, avoiding unnecessary jargon. I hear repeatedly that evening classes/university courses/distance learning courses are not working for them. Law and languages both have a logical structure to them, but are often explained in an illogical way. Law is often explained in a complicated, academic and old-fashioned way. Languages however are often taught with too little explanation being given. Both languages and law however can be fairly straightforward once you understand the background to how the rules developed. To help your learning, I break down the relevant subject bit by bit and explain it bit by bit, so that you can understand it for yourself. Presenting an argument in law (or constructing a sentence in a foreign language) needs some understanding of the theory, but to succeed you also need to gain confidence by practising your skills you need either for exams or for real life experiences.
