I have been part of the teaching team in the UK's largest Economics department for fifteen years now, with an average of over 350 economics students per year passing through the department. As such I have been able to teach students with a very wide range of abilities and needs.
In order to further understand those needs, in 2013 I retook my Economics 'A' Level to gain a true feeling for the student experience, as well as to fully understand structure and timings and to fully understand the process and pressures that students go through.
I am a fully qualified Assistant Examiner for the OCR and AQA exam boards as well as for Cambridge International Examinations for worldwide papers allowing me to fully appreciate what examiners are looking for and how they award marks.
As well as this I have been a speaker at the Tutor2u National Revision Conferences for Economics, at their WOW Economics events for improving student engagement, I have also presented on their "Achieving an A* in Economics" course and contribute regularly to their Economics Blog, which is the leading website for A Level Economics in the UK.
Tutoring Experience
I have taught AQA, Edexcel and OCR Economics for seventeen years and Edexcel Business for ten years in Sixth Form Colleges, as well as GCSE Business Studies. I have also been awarded the Teacher of the Year award at my college, based upon results and student opinions, from a staff of over 200. In my college I am part of the inspection team, so fully understand individual needs of students and different delivery methods and am also part of the college's Teaching and Learning Champions team, which helps to promote more effective teaching and learning within the college.
Tutoring Approach
Having been an examiner, I tend to focus on exam technique. I also have a great deal of experience of working with this age group, so have learnt the best ways to cement the knowledge into the students, by responding to individual needs and getting the students to relate to the subject in their own terms.
I am also able to approach topics from different angles and have found that this really helps with understanding if a student doesn't "get it"!
