Fully qualified, highly experienced maths teacher with a BSc. in maths and statistics, a PGDE in maths, and a Masters in Education from Strathclyde University. Extensive experience as a marker with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). For over 16 years, I have worked with thousands of students across many schools with varying backgrounds and academic skills.

I have extensive and current knowledge of the maths curriculum in Scottish schools because of my role as a maths teacher in Aberdeen and my experience of working with the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

In addition to my years of teaching in the classroom, I have been privately tutoring students for a number of years with consistently excellent results. I understand the complex nature of maths needs and can support students in improving their understanding at the pace that works best for them.

Tutoring Experience

I have been working with young people for over 16 years in the capacity of teacher, tutor and mentor. I have had first-hand experience of common challenges that young people experience when learning maths. I have supported varying needs of my students in classroom over the years and this allows me a greater insight into the needs of my tutees. I have been trained to work with students with additional support needs and I know how to support students who find maths concepts abstract and difficult to follow or understand. My Masters dissertation was about learning and teaching and my research work explored common barriers to learning and how to improve maths understanding.

Most of my students have greatly benefited from my wealth of teaching experience. I can identify the gaps in knowledge, support with numeracy skills, focus on a particular set of questions to be exam ready and know multiple ways of explaining basic and complex concepts.

Years of teaching experience has enabled me to take students from fail to pass in a matter of months. My experience allows me to ask the right questions to quickly assess and understand my students, select the most appropriate resources and build on what students already know. I can fully support my students in understanding maths better, feeling confident in their ability and knowledge, and feeling equipped to face exams with a sense of calm rather than anxiety.

I have been marking for several years and have a deeper understanding of common exam difficulties, where and why students lose marks and how the marking system works. This allows me to support my students in preparing for exams and have a good understanding of the benchmarks and standards they are working for.

Tutoring Approach

Having taught and worked with thousands of students, I'm well versed in meeting the needs of a diverse range of young people with varying levels of ability, confidence, and personalities. My experience allows me to rapidly assess a student, meet them where they're at, and customise a learning plan to help them realise their full potential.

Maths is perceived as a difficult subject. I love maths, and it's my aim to change this perception and welcome it as something we work with in every day of our lives. I tailor my lessons around the needs of my students and understand the uniqueness of their individual needs. This is why my students have been able to improve their exam results significantly.

Since I am a teacher who spends my working days in the classroom, I have a deep understanding of common issues that make maths difficult for some children. I aim to create an environment of calmness where we work on understanding concepts at the pace that works for the students. The needs of each student are unique and my aim is to meet those needs. For some, its back to basic numeracy and for others, it is straight to tricky and complex problems. I have been trained in using various assessment methods to spot those needs and then support students accordingly.

I am approachable for any issues that arise with the work and would keep you informed of progress. I have consistently achieved excellent results with my students. My expert knowledge of the curriculum and ability to impart maths knowledge in an understandable way has helped all of my students over the years.

My work in primary schools and secondary schools has helped me become an efficient tutor as I can support a child at any level, meeting them where they are and progressing from there.

If you are looking for an experienced teacher to support your child with maths, then I am the right person for you!
