I am a highly experienced English and Drama tutor who has worked with children and young people for many years, from primary to university level. I have a special interest in building students' confidence and have supported dozens of young people to excel in their exams (11+, 13+, GCSE, A-Level and BA), to gain entry to their desired schools and universities and instilled a fresh love of learning along the way!
I work as a part-time university lecturer at the University of Reading and University of West London and I have recently completed my PhD, passing my viva with no corrections. I have a First Class BA degree in English Literature from the University of Manchester and a MA in Text and Performance with Distinction from Birkbeck College, University of London. I also work as a theatre-maker.
When I'm not working, I love going to the theatre, reading a great book and getting out into nature
I have taught over 40 children and young people on a 1:1 basis from the ages of 5 - 23 between 2014 - present. I have prepared students for a range of examinations including 11+, GCSEs, A-Level and more generalised academic support. I have helped students to secure places at top secondary schools and Russell Group Universities. I have also worked as a university lecturer for nearly 7 years, at the University of Reading and the University of West London, teaching young people on a range of modules involving lectures, seminar leading, workshop leading, 1:1 supervision and academic tutoring. I am a CELTA qualified teacher of English as a foreign language and spent a year teaching young adults at an English Language school in Seville, Spain. I have also worked as a teaching assistant in a primary school.
As an experienced tutor and university lecturer I understand that each student has a unique approach to learning and has specific needs - the joy of 1:1 tuition is that I am able to tailor lessons in accordance with these specificities in ways that are not always provided in the school classroom.
My approach is therefore one in which I work alongside students and their families to address specific areas where there might be difficulties or challenges and develop a style of working and lesson plans in accordance with this. In general, for exam preparation I will guide students through practice papers, revision guidance and resources, building confidence and exam technique. I am highly skilled in supporting essay and creative writing, textual analysis, critical engagement and imagination.
If my teaching experience and approach sounds like I would be a good fit for your child's learning and development, I would be delighted to hear from you and arrange an initial meeting.
