I hold a BA History & Politics and MA Conflict, Security & Development from the University of Exeter. At A-Level I achieved A*, A,A,A in Government & Politics, History, Economics and Extended Project.
I am an academic tutor (GCSE, A-Level, and bespoke learners) and a mentor (personal statements, analytical & research-based writing) with 7 years experience of tutoring, coaching and mentoring across a variety of academic, professional and vocational fields.
I firmly believe that education should be fun and intellectually stimulating. In my experience, students learn the most when they feel engaged and interested - my lessons aim to do just this. Targeted to the needs of the student, I will endeavour to ensure that my lessons maximise the learning potential so that they achieve their goals.
Tutoring & Mentoring:
Tutored GCSE History students whilst an undergraduate student.
7 years experience as a coach for a leading sail training charity, teaching young people aged 12-25 (from all backgrounds) how to sail on ocean-going voyages around the UK and Europe.
Academic:
I have published academic peer-reviewed essays for leading UK think tanks and journals on defence, security & international relations. These include: the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the Council on Geostrategy. This means I understand how to write clearly and succinctly to communicate an argument.
Professional:
As a Naval Officer in the Royal Navy, I was responsible for the training and development of junior sailors. I led both practical sessions and theory classes to ensure their professional development was aligned to their aspirations.
High quality tuition is based on a mutual understanding of what we are trying to achieve, and then the mutual trust in each other to work together to realise it. I have an adaptable approach and approachable manner so that I am flexible to the student's needs. Students can ask me questions or seek clarifications at any time during or between sessions.
Having a strong understanding of the marking criteria and the appropriate essay technique are two key foundations. Once this is achieved we can build confidence and ambition when engaging with the syllabus content.
For especially ambitions students (government, politics, IR, and international defence and security in particular) I offer critical thinking, advice, further reading in these fields.
