Latin and History Tutoring in Cambridge

I am a finalist at the University of Cambridge, reading Classics. The primary focuses of my undergraduate study thus far have been the Latin and Ancient Greek languages, classical literature, Platonic philosophy, and ancient history. I also have a grounding in linguistics. Placed in the top 25% of my cohort in the 2021 examinations, and was deemed to have acquitted myself with credit in both Latin and Greek composition.

I originally won a place to read History before transferring to Classics in my first year, so I have experience of undergraduate study in both subjects at the University of Cambridge. I also have A Levels in History (AQA), Politics (Edexcel), and Economics (AQA), scoring full marks on my historical investigation and receiving a special achievement award for Politics, and I studied Mathematics to AS Level. At GCSE level, I studied fourteen subjects, securing 8 A*s and 4 As.

Tutoring Experience

I am a new tutor, although I have a wealth of experience through both tutoring within my family, and the provision of academic support to other students while at school throughout my A Level studies and beyond.

Tutoring Approach

For Latin and Greek, lessons are focussed on building a strong command of the respective language, with a view to students being able to engage directly with and translate classical texts confidently, particularly for more experienced learners, for whom additional contextual knowledge about texts can also be provided. Grammar is central to the learning process, and a traditional approach will be adopted to the acquisition of morphology and vocabulary where necessary, including setting students items to be memorised. Lessons are adapted to the specific needs and goals of the individual student, but can include explanations and examples of grammatical concepts, working through practice exercises, past papers and passages, translation techniques, and prose composition, drawing upon my experiences of the teaching employed by the world-renowned supervision system used to teach undergraduates at the University of Cambridge.

For history and politics, lessons are similarly focussed on meeting the needs and goals of individual students, and can be adapted accordingly. For politics, lessons might include discussions of current affairs and contemporary ideas, issues and political structures both in the UK and abroad, and explanations of key political concepts and terminology to support students in comprehending difficult topics. For history, lessons can be given on the Tudors (1485-1603) and revolutionary Russia (1917-1953). For both politics and history, I can help identify gaps in students knowledge, and support can also be provided with all aspects of written work, essay technique and exam preparation, helping students to apply their knowledge to exam questions.
