Vivien

I am an experienced Classics teacher of Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classical Civilization, from KS3 to A level. I teach full-time and am Head of Classics at a grammar school; and I also do some work as a private tutor, teaching students one-to-one online. I graduated from Edinburgh University with an MA Honours in Classics in 1985 and have taught Classics since 1997. In my free time I do a lot of singing (in ensembles) and some sailing. I have three grown-up children.

Tutoring Experience

I have many years of experience in teaching Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilization (since 1997); I have to date tutored 200+ hours online, helping students prepare for: Common Entrance exams for Year 9 entry, GCSE exams and A Level exams. I have extensive knowledge and experience of OCR, Eduqas and IB exams. With an MA Honours in Classics from Edinburgh University, I also have two teaching qualifications (iPGCE and TEFL), QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and speak five languages: English, Dutch, French, Italian and German.

Tutoring Approach

During the first lesson I identify the areas where help appears to be needed. I then set up a plan of action together with the tutee for the lessons. I believe it is important to build a rapport with the student and for the student to be happy with the way I explain things and what I teach. I encourage questions and feedback from the tutee. I have a large supply of teaching material, including past papers, which I can offer the tutee. I enjoy tutoring students one-to-one, working to support them in achieving their very best in the subject and help them gain more confidence and prepare solidly for their exams.
