Timothy Alfred

I come from Bournemouth and is a graduate of King Alfred’s College, Winchester and a Licentiate of The Royal Schools of Music (Music Direction).

I began his musical career aged seven when he became a chorister in the choir of The Priory Church, Christchurch under the direction of Organist and Master of The Choristers Mr. Geoffrey Tristram, and in the school choir at St. Peter‘s De la Salle (RC) College, Bournemouth, during which time he appeared in three television series totalling twenty-five programmes for ITV's Southern Television and numerous BBC Radio Broadcasts. Whilst at St Peter's School he was taught the Bass Tuba by Mr. Jack Payne, the school's Bandmaster, and under his direction performed regularly in the local and wider community. At the age of sixteen he joined the Staff Band, Royal Corps of Signals, and trained for two years at The Junior Musicians Troop, Royal Artillery, Woolwich before joining the senior band based at The School of Signals, Blandford Camp, Dorset. He has toured extensively abroad including Cyprus, Hong Kong, Germany, Norway, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and The United States of America. Whilst studying in the Army he undertook a conducting course at Goldsmith's College, University of London.

Since 1980 I have been very involved with music education and sales working at Eddie Moors' Music, Boscombe, Bournemouth as a senior Sales Manager. In 1982 he was appointed an Associate Conductor of the Bournemouth Youth Orchestra and later became Chairman of the Friends of the Bournemouth Music Centre. As a conductor I have conducted brass and wind bands, choirs and orchestras at numerous National festivals. As a keen tuba player he has played with numerous local orchestras including The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 I co-founded The Wessex Brass Quintet which is well known for its Radio broadcasts, recitals, concerts and educational workshops across the Wessex Region and it has recorded extensively.

Tutoring Experience

Since graduating in 1991 I have taught as a brass instrumental music teacher for The Hampshire Music Service, The Berkshire Young Musicians Trust, The University of Southampton and at numerous schools and colleges. I have been very involved with church music and liturgies in the Winchester area. In 1993, together with four colleagues I formed the Winchester Music School which offers high quality individual and group music tuition encompassing all aspects and styles. The Winchester Music School is part of a community project, working with Foundation Music based at The University of Winchester and which encourages music students, teachers and musicians to work together to enjoy and share their musical talents and skills. In 1997 I became a co-founder, and i have been The Musical Director, of The Meridian Winds band, a forty-five strong symphonic wind band which performs regularly in the local and wider community. In 2000, I co-founded The Winchester Waytes mediaeval and renaissance band which re-creates the music of the 12th to 17th century and performs in and around the ancient capital of England. I also co-director and I am musical editor of Belgarum Music Publishing which publishes and produces music for woodwind, brass, ensembles and bands at all performance levels.

Tutoring Approach

I always try hard to pass on my enjoyment and experiences of performing and creative teaching of my passion for good quality instrumental music and theory of music tuition. I love introducing and building my students into bands and ensembles and, when I feel they are ready and keen, I encourage them to take practical and theoretical music graded examinations always at their choice.
