Private Maths Tuition in Selby

I have lived a varied life, first getting a degree in maths before going into banking. I subsequently returned to university to complete a masters degree, a PhD and some post-doctoral research in meteorology before becoming a maths teacher. I love learning, being around people learning and discovering new things. However I understand all too well the frustration that you can feel when things aren't going as you planned. We all need some help from time to time and working as a tutor allows me to help other people as previously other people have helped me. Outside of tuition I enjoy sport, especially cricket, I enjoy a second job working as a tour guide in the centre of York and I am partial to a pub quiz.
I have a full DBS check and am willing to travel to the pupil's house as required.

Tutoring Experience

I am a qualified maths teacher and have experience of teaching in schools. During my time teaching I worked in a variety of schools and successfully taught pupils in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. I have now worked full time as a tutor for the past 6 and have helped many pupils achieve (or exceed) the grades they required at both GCSE and A-Level.

Tutoring Approach

I understand that not everybody finds maths enjoyable or easy. Even if you enjoy the subject you may at times find yourself struggling to understand the work or how to apply your knowledge to answer exam questions. Students also sometimes find it difficult to ask questions in a packed classroom in school. My approach is to try and build confidence by aiming to understand what you can already do as well as identifying any misconceptions or gaps in knowledge that may be preventing further progress. From there we can work together to build on the foundations of your existing knowledge and reach your potential. I try to be flexible and to adapt to individuals using combinations of exam style questions, problem solving and theory. Ultimately, I don't expect overnight miracles and understand the key things for all involved are patience and perseverance.
