Shaima Ifthikar

As a dedicated science teacher with experience delivering AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy (Chemistry, Physics, Biology), I bring a supportive and passionate approach to education. Holding a First-Class Honours degree in Chemical and Process Engineering (GPA 3.9/4.0), I combine strong academic foundations with hands-on laboratory expertise. I enjoy transforming complex scientific principles into clear, engaging explanations that ignite curiosity and help students feel confident in their learning.

Tutoring Experience

I currently serve as a Science Teacher at Birchfield Independent Girls’ School, where I teach AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (Chemistry, Physics, Biology). In this role, I plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to diverse learning styles, perform lab practicals with students, and manage the science laboratory to ensure a safe, organized, and efficient learning environment. I also support students through differentiated instruction, targeted feedback, and regular progress tracking, helping them build both subject knowledge and study confidence.

Previously, as an Academic Instructor at the University of Peradeniya, I supervised undergraduate design projects, led practical sessions, and provided one-on-one academic mentoring. I developed instructional materials, explained complex chemical engineering concepts in accessible ways, and guided students through scientific writing, project planning, and data analysis.

Across both secondary and university levels, I’ve demonstrated strong classroom management, positive behavior reinforcement, and the ability to foster a respectful and focused learning environment. I’m experienced in motivating students of varying abilities, managing group dynamics, and supporting those who require additional encouragement. My approach is always student-centered, inclusive, and aimed at building long-term academic success.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is interactive, structured, and student-centered. I break down complex chemistry topics into manageable chunks using analogies, diagrams, simulations, and real-life examples to enhance understanding. I integrate past paper questions, exam techniques, and active recall strategies to build exam confidence. I use online tools like digital whiteboards, quizzes, and visual aids to make sessions dynamic and engaging. I focus not only on subject mastery but also on developing scientific thinking, problem-solving skills, and long-term retention.

Key Skills I Bring to Chemistry Tutoring:

Strong subject knowledge: My degree and experience give me a solid understanding of all major chemistry topics across GCSE and beyond.

Clear communication: I specialize in simplifying complex ideas and adapting explanations to suit the student’s pace and learning style.

Laboratory insight: My experience in labs enables me to explain practicals, techniques, and safety in a clear and relatable way.

Exam preparation: I help students master question interpretation, mark schemes, and revision strategies that improve performance.

Patience and empathy: I understand that every student learns differently, and I always meet them where they are, helping them feel supported and motivated.

Digital literacy: Proficient with online teaching tools to create interactive and effective virtual learning experiences.

My ultimate goal is to help students not just achieve excellent grades, but to enjoy learning chemistry and feel confident applying it in real-life situations.
