Private English Tuition in Islington

I am a recent graduate of the London School of Economics (LSE) where I studied BA Social Anthropology. Prior to my Bachelor's degree, I studied at Simon Langton Grammar school and received A*A*A at A-Level in English, Philosophy, and History respectively. I am currently applying for an MFA in Creative Writing.

My personal reasons for tutoring are based largely on a single experience I had while in year 13: I was predicted to receive ABD just months before my final exams. My careers advisor showed a faith in me that I had never before received and recommended that my predicted grades were instead changed to A*AA. Repaying the remarkable faith that had been shown in me immediately demonstrated the immense potential each student holds when guided by tutors and teachers who believe in their capacity for learning.

Outside of education, I am a voracious reader as much as I am a huge football and cricket fan (which, let me tell you, is possibly too much).

Tutoring Experience

Full disclosure: this will be my first time tutoring! I am very much looking forward to employing my love for literature and my familial background in teaching to a worthwhile and productive cause.

I received an A* in English literature for my GCSEs in 2015 and went on to study the subject for A-level.

While at university, I was the Sport Editor of the award-winning student paper for three years. I also set up a satire magazine with a friend which was funded by a copy editing scheme designed to help foreign students who struggle with the written word.

I took a literature module in my final year, sometimes hosting and leading classes, and was told by my teacher "You hosted such an effective discussion on the topic, and judging from your participation in class discussions, I have always been confident that you are going to produce a solid and strong essay."

My father has been a teacher and a tutor for over twenty years and has always based his approach on that which impels the student to love their studies, all the while securing excellent results. I am, in part, inspired by the crucial work I have grown up seeing him do.

Tutoring Approach

I have always found that students work best when they find a unique approach to reading, revision, and writing that works for them. That may sound obvious, but without securing their own system, so many students end up despising the work they do because they feel it isn't in their best interest.

Above all else, my job as a tutor is to ensure that the student learns to enjoy the subject, after which I am positive they can exceed their own expectations. Fortunately, English Literature is a subject that can be both taught and learned with immense creativity: there is neither a single right answer, nor a single wrong one, but there is a way of expressing oneself that demands practice and thought. My approach will center on giving agency to the student in discovering their own interpretations and will require buckets of hard work and diligence.
Where necessary I will offer my own interpretations to the works being studied, but my job will be to ensure that the student's work is being worthily elucidated and considered.

I am easy-going and personable but dedicated and scrutinizing where necessary; teaching is, I believe, designed for people who synthesize genuine enthusiasm and an ability to instill and inspire hard work.
