Online Maths and Chemistry Teacher

Hi, my name is Santos and I'm currently a medical student at the University of Birmingham going into my second year in September. I have a real passion for the sciences and mathematics, so as you can imagine my areas of specialisation include Maths, Biology and Chemistry. I’m enthusiastic and approachable and I aim to not only improve attainment but to spark interest so students enjoy what they are learning.

I recently finished in the school system and completed 4 A-Levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Economics, achieving A*s in all of them; I also have 10 GCSEs - all grade 9. Hence, I have a detailed knowledge of subject curricula and exam board requirements so I understand what it takes to achieve success in such a competitive environment and the various question types exam boards employ to try to catch students out.

For those students looking to apply to university, I am very familiar with the medical school application process and I can therefore provide you with some guidance. I have a lot of experience in writing personal statements and can give extra help for medical school interviews. I'm also happy to help with the UCAT entrance exam as I scored in the 96th decile during my own application process.

Tutoring Experience

For 4 years (Yr10-Yr13), I consistently delivered tutoring sessions within my school's mentoring programme, helping peers from younger years to improve in their studies and, in the latter years, pick up exam tips & tricks. I also have a year of experience coaching peers at a sports club I had been a member of growing up. I have gained valuable experience in tailoring my teaching methods to suit each individual's needs and I believe personalising lesson plans is therefore the best approach. I have spent time tutoring students with a range of abilities and ages which has made me a more well-rounded individual.

Furthermore, I worked with 4 GCSE maths students in my school over year 13 and each of them achieved in the range of grades 7-9. As well as this, I have tutored students outside of my school for GCSE maths covering a different exam board and adapting my teaching style to accommodate this change. I have also worked with 3 KS3 and GCSE students in Biology and Chemistry. Lastly, I have worked with 2 younger students to help them in their 11+ entrance exam preparation and both of them were subsequently accepted into a grammar school.

Tutoring Approach

My goal is to give pupils the confidence to apply the knowledge they already know in the most effective way to maximise exam marks. Nothing is worse than when you know the content but the examiner is being fussy and just won't give you the marks!

My teaching strategy involves going through the course specification to identify weaknesses or areas for improvement. I then act on these findings through means of work-sheets, past papers or content-based resources.
