I am 29 years old and have always enjoyed maths since I was at school. I am passionate about working with young people to help them achieve their potential. I enjoy swimming, yoga and reading in my free time. I also attend a church and help lead the kids work there.
I spent two years training on the job as a maths teacher through Teach First in a secondary school in Blackpool. I worked with all ages of students (aged 11-16) and with a full range of maths ability (I have taught Edexcel GCSE curriculum for higher and foundation tier). Over the past four years I have worked as a lead teacher for an education charity teaching maths and other subjects in a school with students who have been excluded from mainstream education. I have also developed practical strategies and delivered training to help other staff include mastery techniques and reasoning into the maths lessons taught across the charity. I have previously tutored one-to-one as a part of my job and also outside of school and I really enjoyed the rapid development a student can make with an individualised learning plan. I currently am a foster carer and tutor as my main role.
I am of the view that students are motivated by success and when someone enjoys something they are far more likely to succeed. I enjoy developing mathematical confidence in students where it is lacking and I like to use diagrams, objects and pictures to help students visualise a concept and become confident with an idea before expecting them to answer questions independently. I prioritise building fluency with number basics and with revisit quick questions often to ensure that students retain their learning in this area. I also enjoy being able to build good working relationships with the students I work with I using a sense of humour to put students at ease.
