Having spent several years in PR and Marketing I decided to go into teaching (initially because my children were not learning any languages at primary school) with a view to teaching French. I have since spent 20 years teaching, some in State, but predominantly in Independent schools. Whilst I have taught a variety of subjects, English and French have been my major focus and I am currently the Head of English at a Prep School near Salisbury.

Tutoring Experience

Having taught in a State Primary school in Salisbury for nearly two years, (Y5, ICT lead and French lead) I moved to the Independent Sector and did several years at Norman Court Prep School, teaching French and English up to Common Entrance 13+ (mainly Y7 and Y8). Having been Head of French/MFL for several years in a couple of Prep Schools, I decided to focus on my English teaching. Since then, I have been Head of English at two Prep Schools and have also expanded my teaching by teaching GCSE English in the Senior School attached to the Prep School where I worked. I have tutored for 11+ ISEB English, 11+ Grammar School English and Verbal Reasoning, general English tuition, English 13+ ISEB, GCSE English tuition, French 13+ ISEB and French GCSE tuition. I have done 1:1 tutoring for the past 11 years in the Salisbury area.

Tutoring Approach

I vary my teaching depending on the age of the child, the reason for the tutoring/needs of the child and the subject that I am teaching. Where possible I like to include a variety of activities in each session to engage my pupil, but for 11+ Grammar, 13+ ISEB and GCSE tutoring, there is a requirement to practise certain skills by working through past papers - not the most exciting, but nevertheless a necessity! I am very passionate about the subjects I teach and hope that this helps make the tutoring session a positive experience for my tutees.
