Hi! My name is Sam and I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first class MEng, specialising in Electrical & Electronic, Systems and Control Engineering (although I studied General Engineering for the first 2 years). I am 25 years old and originally from Sheffield, worked in Cambridge before returning to study a PhD. I have a passion for tutoring maths and science, although my interests are far wider.
As well as being a keen programmer, electronic hobbyist, I enjoy a whole host of practical activities that include woodworking, gardening, DIY - and plenty of sports. I have played football, squash, rugby, cricket for years, am a keen runner and also a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Karate.
I previously mentored students struggling with maths during my time in Secondary School and I have loved teaching and engaging with people of all abilities. Over the past year I have tutored students at all stages in their education and have experience with children with learning difficulties. Every experience has been extremely rewarding. I am extremely patient (I grew up with 5 siblings!), enthusiastic and creative with my thinking, and love the challenge of explaining concepts and ideas to people in different ways.
Achieving a place at Cambridge (coming from a state school background), and going through the admissions tests (ENGAA) and interviews recently, means I can provide great insight into the admissions process for Oxbridge. I am keen to pass on the tips and tricks I have learned and guide students along their own paths by supplying them with the insight into what is really looked for in candidates.
I see the tutoring process as being a mentor for a kid and I find value in being a role model. I look forward to working with you!
I believe learning through examples is often the most productive way to engage with topics, so doing past paper questions is very important. However, individual topics and students do require different approaches, so I would always be looking to adapt my teaching approach to maximise results!
