My name is Sally. I live in Bournemouth, not far from the beach. I am now at the stage where I am leaving full-time teaching and focussing on tutoring.
I am a qualified and experience teacher who has worked in both the primary and secondary sector since 1996. In all my roles, I have been the co-ordinator/lead for English and/or Literacy. I introduced the National Literacy Strategy in one school, was a leading literacy teacher for the local authority where I also helped failing schools, and planned and presented a degree module for teaching assistants to teach English creatively whilst in another role. I am currently a writing moderator for the local authority and am also working on a progression document for writing for an Academy Trust. I have worked mainly in Year 6 but have experience from Year 3 to Year 11. I am confident to teach English to all year groups, including GCSE language and literature, and maths to primary school children.
My approach is one of patience and understanding whilst still encouraging the student to work at a level which challenges them. I find out where the student feels their strengths are and then explore their needs and the areas they find difficult. Together we pick a starting point and work through the subject area until we hit a tricky area, where we slow down and explore this in detail so that the student can fully grasp the concept and feel confident, before moving on. I like to tailor my lessons to each individual student, supplying all necessary materials such as study guides and other equipment. For GCSE, I am happy to grade work that might have been set during the session and give detailed feedback. Students need to feel comfortable with their tutor and, although I will push them to achieve the best they can, I do this with kindness and understanding.
