Private Maths and English Tuition in Highbury

Originally from the town of Llanidloes in Mid Wales, I have been based in London for the past ten years. After studying at The Russell Group University of York, I spent two years studying theatre at the prestigious Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris. Alongside teaching, I also work as an actor having performed in shows on the West End, Edinburgh Fringe and Europe and I also write and perform my own material.

Tutoring Experience

If you are interested in school entrance exam tutoring, I have helped students gain places at the following schools:
City of London Boys,
Highgate,
HABs,
St Paul's,
Mill Hill,
UCS,
Westminster,
Henrietta Barnett,
Latymer Grammar,
Dame Alice Owens,
Forest School,
Channing,
Eton College

Entrance exam subjects:
7+ English and Maths
11+ English, VR and NVR
13+ English
ISEB common pre test

I have been working in education alongside my work in theatre for ten years. I began as a teaching assistant for experience in understanding independent schools as Reigate Grammar School in Surrey and quickly moved to 1.1 tuition.

As a private tutor, I have helped students prepare for school entrance exams (7, 11, 13+), provided extra support for students falling behind in English and Maths, and given extra focus to English GCSE students who have then vastly improved their predicted grades. I also tutor students preparing for LAMDA examination in both Acting and Speaking Verse & Prose and have an average pass rate of Distinction from all of my students.

Tutoring Approach

The thought of having a tutor for any student can be quite unpleasant. Either they may be struggling in a subject so your presence can signal that they are failing at something or perhaps you are helping them prepare for entrance exams, which can be extremely daunting. My approach has always been to keep it as relaxed and informal as possible whilst keeping it extremely focused within the perimeters of the goal ahead. I don't want any of my students to dread their lesson but to enjoy it and use it as an opportunity to share their growing confidence and feel relaxed enough to ask about anything they do not understand. We all learn differently and I have developed ways of making lessons catered to the individual student. I know that, for some students, sitting in a classroom with one teacher can be incredibly difficult and impossible to focus leading to the false belief that they are failing. My approach would encourage them to relax, to become brave enough to recognise what they do not understand and to become strong and independent learners.
