Robin

Hi, I'm Robin.

During my Social Anthropology degree at university, I undertook a 3 month study experience in India and became fascinated by the culture of the place. As a result of the report I wrote about my experience, I was invited to study Comparative Religion degree at the University of Manchester by the head of faculty. There I studied the major world religions in depth and from then on I have been a passionate communicator of all things religion! I have spent many years travelling the world to understand faiths at first hand. In addition I have led numerous field trips to India, Thailand, Japan and Nepal.
I have been a practising Buddhist for a quarter of a century. I have been invited to speak on numerous panels, I have given many lectures about Buddhist philosophy around the country and have several articles published. I am currently writing a series of Young Adult Fantasy novels that incorporate Eastern Philosophy and mythology!

Tutoring Experience

Two decades of supporting students in achieving the highest grades. I have taught at both State and Independent sectors over my career and am able to communicate with a wide variety of students. I am currently Head of Department at an Outstanding school in Cheshire achieving consistently excellent results.
I am an examiner for AQA for Religious Studies.

Tutoring Approach

Very much student centred.
That is, I begin with where the student is currently at.
My first session will all be about getting to know the student, their interests, what they know already and what they are struggling with. I will then ensure I communicate the material in a way that is accessible to them.
I will provide stimulating materials which will help scaffold their learning, from the most basic understanding to a level that is appropriate to their needs.

Two styles of teaching may include:
a) For those who are struggling with the content:
One mistake inexperienced tutors and teachers make, believe it or not, is to over-teach the subject content! This can sometimes lead the student to have their brains filled with interesting information that they may find hard to apply in an examination setting. So. for those who feel they 'cannot get their heads around' the material, I will help them to 'declutter' to ensure they can access the crucial they need information easily.

b) For those who are seeking A or A* grades:
I will offer access to material that will effectively extend their subject knowledge so they can add the extra dimension needed for the highest grades.

c) For those hoping to improve essay technique:
Religious Studies essays are not easy. There are no 'right' answers - instead the examiners are looking for the student's ability to construct convincing evaluative arguments. I will work with the student, helping them to plan powerful arguments to a) help them fully grasp this difficult skill and b) to ensure that they can apply these skills to ANY essay question!
