Having taught for many years in state schools, I have recently retired. For the last 22 years I was the Head of Technology and Engineering at a successful comprehensive school and in that time I have taught a wide range of subjects up to A level and worked on several National School based engineering initiatives. I have a 2.1 (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol and then worked in the engineering industry for many years before converting to teaching. I have worked (and still work) with several exams boards on various qualifications.
I have 26 years of full time teaching in secondary schools. Primarily in engineering (and engineering maths) to A Level standard. I have also taught GCSE Maths and Science at KS3 and the full range of Technology subjects.
As a Head of Technology and Engineering I developed a wide range of teaching materials and have assisted in training many new teachers in a wide range of teaching styles. During my teaching I have also worked as a sixth form tutor working one to one with students in Maths, Science and Engineering. I successfully teach online lessons using a range of resources including visualisers, shared workboards and interactive Powerpoints/Google Slides.
Learning should be fun and engaging!
When working one to one, the lessons can be tailored to meet the needs of the student. I work together with the student on problem areas to ensure understanding and familiarity. This is then supported by additional tasks that the student can work though to consolidate that learning. I have a friendly approach and am happy (and used to) assisting whenever a student has a problem.
If a student struggles to master a topic then I draw upon my many years of teaching experience to find different and alternative ways to help with the understanding. As an engineer I have always found having a practical context very helpful in remembering concepts.
Each student is different and so will need a tailored approach specific to their needs.
