I'm Ricky and I currently live in Waltham Forest. I'm a UCL graduate, who has achieved a 2:1 in my BSc in Mathematics and have achieved a distinction in my MSc in Finance with Banking at the University of Bath. I have a passion to pass on the knowledge to those who are willing to learn.
I've taught some children music before and occasionally help at "Maths Clinics". I've worked at "Explore Learning" for over a year. The work there involves teaching children from the ages of 5-15, and advising them on how they can improve their work, method and techniques of solving problems. At the centre, I would be responsible for tutoring six children at a given point as well as having to run workshops from time to time.
Furthermore, I was a mentor at UCL for first year undergraduates.
I teach the new concept to the student, then check whether they understand it by asking them to explain it back to me. Then, practise questions may be used. Exam-style questions may be used occasionally.
I will try to vary my techniques until the student truly understands a certain concept.
My ultimate goal for any student is to make real and noticeable progress in their subject. I know that different students learn differently and it's important for me to identify their own unique learning style, not only to maximise their learning but to inspire as well as motivating them to learn. I try to find the balance between making learning both informative and enjoyable. See below a summary of my general approach:
• Focus on any identified areas of weakness and build on strengths.
• Adopt teaching method to suit student's learning style.
• Facilitate learning; encourage students to use own ideas to solve problems.
• Guidance and confidence; Ensuring that after explaining a concept or method to a student, they're able to understand it and confidently use it in future problems.
• Teach by principle enabling students to deal with all manner of complex problems.
• To aid understanding some topics maybe covered on a wider level than the syllabus specifies.
• Assess progress using exercise workbooks and other test assessments.
• Prepare students for exams; going through past papers and exam techniques.
• Homework is given and completion is expected by next lesson.
