Rachel

York English and French Tutor

I am dedicated, flexible and animated. I love meeting new people, learning about different cultures and seeing things from different perspectives. The most rewarding thing about tutoring for me is helping students to reach their goals.
My hobbies and interests include conservation, cooking, nutrition, yoga, swimming, walking, kayaking, singing, dancing and watching foreign films/series.

Tutoring Experience

I have 18 years of experience as an educator. I studied Modern European Languages at Durham University, as I have always been passionate about languages and travelling. I first trained as an English as a Second or Other Language Teacher and then as a Foreign Language Teacher (French, German and Italian) before also becoming a Learning Support Teacher/Tutor. I have taught and tutored in many countries including the UK, Thailand, Belgium, France, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Kenya, Qatar and the UAE. This included all UK school age groups ranging from Year 1 through to Year 13. I have extensive experience of working with young learners; GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, IB and IELTs examination preparation; and English for Academic Purposes.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching style is interactive and student-centred and varies depending on what works best for each learner and what their gaols are. I spend time each lesson getting to know the student as an individual so I can design activities that appeal to their specific learning style and interests. I particularly enjoy incorporating flashcards, props, realia, online language games, thinking-skills starter activities, stories/literature, drama, music and TPR activities to engage, motivate, aid memory and foster creativity. Laughter is a key part of my lessons.
