Music Tutoring in Manchester

Philip started his music education in Trikala (Greece) at the age of 7 at Papastathi Music School, where he studied violin, piano, theory, harmony, counterpoint, history of music, dictation, solfege, analysis and figured bass. He was principal violinist and frequently soloist of the conservatoire’s orchestra as well as principal piano accompanist. In 2014 he received his Harmony degree with the highest grade possible after three years of intense preparation based on a thorough curriculum and in 2018 after a 90-minute recital he received his Violin Diploma along with a special prize from the judges. At the same time, he was studying violin, piano and byzantine music at the Music School of Trikala, which he attended for six years. He was also principal violinist and occasional conductor of the Trikala Youth Orchestra and artistic director, arranger and conductor of the White Noiz Ensemble, a contemporary youth ensemble that he founded in 2012. The work of this unique ensemble became well known around the country (Greece) and in 2015, it was awarded by the Athens State Orchestra. In 2014 Philip won the 1st Panhellenic Larissa piano competition.

On completing his school education, Philip went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) as a principal study composer under Laura Bowler and Larry Goves. During his time at the college he has been commissioned by the Halle, Manchester Afterhours Festival, Anthony Burgess Foundation and the Greek National Radio Orchestra (ERT). He was Highly Commended in the 2018 Rosamond Prize for his collaboration with a poet and in 2019 was selected as a finalist for the RNCM Gold Medal Competition. As a performer, Philip was the second violinist of the Lux String Quartet who were selected to participate at the Wigmore Hall National String Quartet Weekend where they received coaching from some of the most prominent string quartets of the world. In 2018 they were flown to Greece to give Chamber Music masterclasses to young chamber groups around the country. He is now a member of the art-rock band Sylvette who are produced by New Order’s guitarist Phil Cuningham, and who have played all around the UK. They are currently achieved UK wide success having been played on BBC Radio 6 and indorsement from prominent musical figures in the industry.

Tutoring Experience

I have had experience teaching theory in a classroom at Papastathi music school. I have also given chamber music and composition masterclasses in Greece and taught private students of many different levels and ages in composition, theory, violin and piano.

Tutoring Approach

Philip is a dynamic teacher with a holistic approach to music education. He has had many years of experience in violin and piano performance as well as in composition. He has a deep understanding of many genres of music and has worked in classical composition, arrangements/orchestrations, pop music song writing and band collaborations.

Through his experience as an artistic director and conductor he has acquired good leadership and organization skills as well as patience. At the same time his multifaceted career in performance and composition has given him a very deep understanding of music. He has taught violin, piano, chamber music, theory and composition at various levels.

Philips is passionate about teaching and welcomes students of all ages and abilities. His unique skill set means that he can provide a tailor-made education to different types of students and understands their specific requirements and needs.
