I have lived, and worked in schools, in the North of England for most of my life until recently and as well as teaching full time for the whole of my career I have enjoyed sharing my love of the hills through involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme (I am qualified as a Mountain Leader). I have recently retired from my permanent full-time post to give more time to other challenges and interests: geology, astronomy, long distance trail running and hill walking. In addition to this I love spending time with my two young grandchildren and reading classic novels.

Tutoring Experience

I have lots of years of teaching experience of all Secondary age groups and have successfully taught numerous A-level and GCSE Physics students as well as Key stage 3 Science for over thirty years. I have also taught A-level Geology for the past sixteen years. In the last couple of years I have volunteered with Tutorfair and Refunet to teach English as a Second Language, Maths and Physics on-line to people who would not otherwise be able to afford a private tutor.

Tutoring Approach

I positively love sharing Physics and Science in general with whoever wants to know! I can help to increase a young person’s confidence and understanding so that they can reach their full potential. My previous school students have found me very approachable and good at explaining difficult concepts in an accessible way, as well being full of enthusiasm.
Flexibility and responsiveness to individual needs and requests forms the basis of my approach to tutoring. In the light of this I will teach a topic and whenever possible ground it in experience by applying it to practise exam questions; at the pace of the student, yet encouraging their progress.
Experience tells me how valuable one to one sessions are for accelerating progress.
