Personal Description:

Full Time Tutor - Enthusiastic and able to build strong working relationships with those who are looking to thrive, or indeed are struggling with their subject. Please contact for Availability, I have an ever increasing schedule especially in the build up to the examination period!

A small introduction to my background in School and Teaching:

My teachers would have said that I was not one of the well behaved boys as school. In hindsight, I can agree with that view. In truth, some teachers never had much hope for me, and for my A levels. The school I went to, Radley College, had a very strict approach to decorum. However, behavior and exam success are not things that correlate. To the surprise of many (especially myself) I came out of school with strong grades in English, Drama and an A* in History, achieving 100% in the A2 History exam.

To say my experience of reaching a strong set of exam results was enjoyable is not true. Exams are hard, and this is a truth that everyone faces. It was determination, maturity and organisation that got myself to a stage where I knew that no matter how I performed on the day, I would succeed.

I have always had a love of acting, although my enjoyment of watching it is primary to my participation. However, I have always acted and will continue to do so. I was the lead role in my University musical, and have performed in small plays through school and uni. They have given me a great ability to be a public speaker, and to say that I fall victim to embarrassment or nerves is as distant a statement you can make of me. Another aspect which adds to my character is my Irish heritage. I am a full Irish Citizen who has a full English Accent, but I can assure 'the gift of the gab' is something that my Irish culture has luckily bestowed upon me.

I am known for being a patient, kind and caring tutor who pushes his students to enjoy the time we spend together, as well as working hard towards the goals the student sets themselves. Although I am the tutor, I expect my students to know what they want better than I do.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching since the age of 16. I worked in Romania on a Charity trip in which I taught underprivileged children, in an underdeveloped town. The inspiration these children gave me, as well as the impact I felt I had on them, gave me the zeal to pursue what I have found to be a respectful career.

Since my teenage teaching, I have gone on to do more Charity Work for the company Action Tutoring, working in schools with failing students. I mainly worked in Brighton and Hove whilst completing my degree in English and Drama at the University of Sussex. As soon as university finished, I began to teach in both schools and privately, with my role always being as a 1-on-1 educational supporter. For the past two years, I have accumulated over 400 Hours of Tutoring Experience. Every single one of my clients has seen improvements, and I often have clients return for a quick polishing up too.

"Patrick worked with my 10 year old son in the term leading up to his 11+ exams, helping him with English comprehension and creative writing. He taught him techniques to help him to answer comprehension questions fully and gave him the confidence and ability to enhance his creative writing with which he had struggled. Most importantly, Patrick ensured the sessions were fun and lighthearted and adapted sessions according to how my son was feeling on a particular day. Patrick was always willing to chat through how each session had gone and what they had been working on which was extremely useful. Patrick is an enthusiastic tutor who has a passion for language and I would definitely recommend him."

“Patrick was a fantastic tutor and just what Alex needed - someone young and "cool" that A could relate to and respect all at the same time. Patrick was spot on in knowing how to get the best out of Alex, giving him praise and reassurance exactly when needed. Patrick was lovely to have around in our house, a pleasure to work with and very knowledgeable and professional at all times. “

Tutoring Approach:

I usually have worked with students who are approaching Entrance Exams, GCSE and A Levels. In this form of education, my aim is to create a system in which all basic skills are mastered, and Exam Technique is the priority. Although passionate about my subjects, I often find the student I teach is not. That is why I make it clear to all my clients, we are here to pass an exam, and not to attempt to inject enthusiasm or passion for the subject, as one builds these through their own pursuits, not through the pursuits of an exam board.

I have an organised and processional style to my teaching. The main mantra being; if you have not completed a section, we will not progress. However, my style of teaching relies on a patience and humility that makes your child feel as if they are working with a friend rather than a teacher. I also make sure we have a fun, not because of the subject, but because of my character. I enjoy a laugh, and entice most of my students with my humor. I don't go for a slapstick approach, but create a comedic rapport, similar to the relationship between friends that garners a form of respect. I prefer to gain respect, rather than demand it, as this ensures that the student wishes to learn from their teacher. Further to this, I may teach a subject, but it is my experience of life that makes me unique. I can promise to give your child as much of an education about the difficulties they will face after school, as well as the mountains they have to climb during it. Exams are not the definition or end of someone's life if failed. But if aced, they can be the beginning of something great.

When working with adults, especially with development around literature, I aim to work on building basic skills that may have been lost over the years. Having a better understanding of grammar and a larger lexical bank with which you can hold better rhetoric, be it with friends, family, or work.
