Online Chemistry and Biology Teacher

Hello! My name is Parisa Hossain-Ibrahim. I am 19 years old and I am a second year medical student at The University of Edinburgh. I enjoyed Biology and Chemistry at school, where I studied Advanced Highers in these subjects before gaining entry into medical school. I am offering tutoring for these two subjects at National 5 level.

Tutoring Experience

During sixth form, I volunteered in my school’s learning skills department. There, I offered support to S3 and S5 pupils in the subject areas of Higher Biology, Higher Maths and National 5 Maths. As well as this, as the eldest sibling in my family, I help and advise my family members in various school subjects as well as in generic study skills. I thoroughly enjoyed these experiences as it was rewarding to see these individuals grasp concepts which they had not previously understood.

Tutoring Approach

My aim is to help students identify and achieve their learning goals. I offer online tutoring via zoom, with other communication via email. My appointments are on week-day evenings for one hour. I hold a current Disclosure Scotland certificate. I maintain confidentiality about pupil work within normal safeguarding boundaries.

The initial session will be based on identifying specific areas the pupil wishes to cover as well as understanding the pupil’s aims from tutoring and their preferred approach to learning. Communication with the parent or guardian and reports or grades may help with this. It is important to set aims and learning outcomes for sessions. I use study guides and the SQA curriculum to ensure work fits with SQA expectations. Also, I ask pupils to keep my log of what we have covered so that progress is tracked and gaps can be targeted. As well as this, I use active techniques such as practice questions to consolidate learning and identify areas to develop. Additionally, I can explain concepts respectfully to pupils in a safe space, using diagrams and simplifying things when needed. I am happy for pupils to ask me questions or go over material again.
