English and Music Tuition in Brighton

I have taught at secondary schools and universities for nearly twenty years, and I still work part-time as a secondary school teacher. I have a degree in Music from Cambridge University, and a PhD in Aesthetics from Bristol University (focusing on the Minimalist music of Steve Reich). I compose musical theatre and conduct regularly, but teaching remains a tremendously important part of my life. There is a tremendous buzz in helping someone realise their full potential as a musician and thinker. I split my time between Brighton and North London, and am available for tutoring in both areas.

Tutoring Experience

As a secondary school teacher I have worked as Head of Department at a number of prestigious state and private schools, helping students achieve excellent grades at GCSE and A-level, and preparing a considerable number of students for successful applications to Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Manchester, Kings College London, Durham, Trinity Laban, Guildhall, and other universities and conservatoires. At university level, I have taught a range of courses at Bristol University and Cambridge University, including harmony and counterpoint, various periods of classical music history, and aesthetics (the latter on BA and Masters programmes).

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach starts with the student, helping them connect what they already know and the skills they already have to what they are currently studying. Focusing on skills helps students to become more confident, independent learners, and I take a structured, step-by-step approach to help them develop their composing, critical thinking and analysis. With a wide-ranging knowledge of repertoire, I also help students develop their contextual understanding of music, something there is increasing emphasis on in all GCSE and A-level syllabi. With undergraduates, I help students further develop their musical analysis, contextual understanding, and also focus on critical reading of musicological texts to ensure full understanding of the issues.
