I have been working in the field of education for around 9 years. I have a degree in English Literature and Language, and a PGCE from Nottingham University in English teaching, I also have a Masters from Warwick University in Educational Leadership, and a lot of teaching experience. As a fully-qualified teacher with a passion for the subject, I have a firm grasp of learning theory and different pedagogical approaches, which underpins the way I teach and how I maximise the potential of my students.
I have worked in the independent sector and also comprehensive schools, where I was head of KS3. I have experience teaching students of different abilities and backgrounds.
I have designed materials that have been exam-board approved by AQA, Edexcel and WJEC. This means I have the resources to provide my students with exam preparation and essay feedback that is specific to the exam board.
I thoroughly enjoy 1-1 tutoring because I get to see how the students improve each session. It is important to me that they feel they enjoy the sessions and they understand the value in what they are learning. I try to work around how each student learns, finding new ways to engage.
Between sessions I will prepare for each lesson, ensuring I have prepared a lesson that is specific to each student’s needs, this is what makes tutoring a unique experience.
I work on a basis of diagnose, test, repeat, focussing on one specific skill at a time. I will need to gauge what it is they need to improve on, and to help them understand how and why.
Depending on the student’s preference, I may set a task for the student that is specific to their goal. For exam preparation sessions, I will review this piece of work and assess the strengths, and areas for improvement. This saves valuable lesson time and means we maximise progress.
I like to set regular targets for the student to fulfil outside of lesson hours, so they will develop independence in their working style.
I focus on the following educational groups. Having taught all of these year groups for years and have been the head of KS3 at a school, also I have been on regular training days from the exam board, so I have a strong understanding of the mark scheme for the GCSE-level exams.
