Maths and English Lessons in Birmingham

I am a qualified primary school teacher and have plenty of experience in working in line with the national curriculum.
Currently, I am taking a break from teaching to be a full time mum. Tutoring has allowed me to combine my job with my passions (being a mum and a teacher). My lessons usually are an hour long and coincide with children's interests.

Tutoring Experience

I have previously worked at many child-centred institutions ranging from; nurseries, primary schools, special-needs schools and tuition centres around Birmingham.

I have been teaching in Primary Schools for just over 4 years and I have had three years of experience in tutoring Maths and English to primary aged children in which I was accountable for:

• Marking English and Maths work by applying KS1 and 2 framework strategies
• Increasing pupils’ literacy and numeracy proficiency
• Encouraging lower ability groups to raise academic standards
• Mentor higher ability groups at KS2 levels in preparation for their 11+ exams.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that tutoring is the culmination of what a child learns in school, bringing forth all the varying ideas and concepts into holistic knowledge. The purpose therefore is to enable the child to think independently, applying practical and thought-out rationale to any decision. Due to this, tutoring must be tailored specifically to the needs of an individual child – a generic strategy is impossible.

Firstly, I carry out an initial assessment to develop an understanding of the needs of the child. This can be in various forms ranging from an informal meeting with the parent or carer to a more structured written assessment. Every child will have a range of strengths and weaknesses. My preferred approach is to begin with the strengths to develop their confidence and then gradually approach the weaknesses with optimal support available to the child throughout.

During my sessions, I utilise a variety of methods and resources and tailor my lessons to the way the child learns best. These include modelling and game-based learning both using a mixture of traditional worksheets and modern technology. There will be regular assessments to confirm that a child is making progress through each topic.

At the end of each session, the parent/carer will be provided with a report of how their child performed during the session and their projected progress.
