Maths Tutor. I graduated with an Integrated Masters from the University of Edinburgh, where I obtained first-class honours in Chemical Engineering in July 2021. Throughout my five years at the University, I took courses that furthered my understanding of applied mathematics, especially calculus. At High School, I studied the Scottish SQA curriculum from National 5 up to Advanced Highers - I obtained grade A1 in Maths for each qualification. My main ambition is to provide access to people or communities who might not have the financial or technical expertise. I believe tutoring is one way to achieve this.
I have worked as student support, volunteer, and paid tutor. During my last year of High School, I was an assistant to a Year 2 Maths Class and supported a computer science classroom.
In my first year of University, I was a paid Maths tutor for Tutorful. I helped a student achieve grade A in their Advanced Higher Mathematics exam. From 2017 to 2019, I became a Peer Assisted Learning Support, where I tutored University level courses to first-year engineering students. I was responsible for improving the Engineering learning environment as a course facilitator and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in the two years.
Currently, I am a volunteer tutor for the “Syrian Teenage Tutoring and Educational Programs” initiative - a programme organised by the University of Edinburgh students to bridge the education gap for student refugees and help them adjust to the Scottish academic environment. I have served in this role for the past two years.
I like to use visual explanations in order to give students a more practical understanding of topics that help them garner interest in the subject. In addition, making complex concepts more relatable allows the student to establish a core understanding of the basics. Understanding the basic idea is a crucial part of learning. I prefer the student to solve problems more naturally or instinctively instead of memorising methodology. This approach would also help them analyse a solution to determine why it is correct or wrong, thus helping to identify areas for improvement.
Finally, I believe tutoring should be more personalised to individual needs; hence, short-term goals and pacing will depend on the student. Building up student confidence to sit their final examinations is my goal.
