As teachers, we are architects of hope, a hope for a brighter successful future generation. Maths as a subject is empirical to navigating everyday life and is at the heart of the sciences. I am currently studying for my PGCE in mathematics at Birmingham City University. As part of this course, it is mandatory to undertake school placement for 120 days during this current academic year (22-23). This has already begun, and I am currently in my 4th week of teaching full classes. Mathematical Pedagogy is a module in the PGCE in which related to the way in which maths is taught and learned, I have learned through this the different ways in which pupils may learn and the necessity to approach topics from different lenses- most importantly to avoid cognitive overload.

Tutoring Experience

Statistics show that the “best” teachers have a strong background in subject knowledge, and I can confirm this through my academic achievements. I obtain a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester [Grade: 2.1] allowing me to garner knowledge on physics, chemistry, biology, maths, computing, and economics. My GCSE achievements were 10A*s 2As and 1B from Queen Mary’s Grammar school and A-Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Design & Technology and EPQ (Grades: B, B, B, A, A respectively).

Tutoring Approach

Use differentiation techniques to tackle areas in which a student may be weak. The use of modelling techniques to enable visualisation of a problem that may be difficult to grasp initially. Adapying to visual learners, auditory learners, kinesthetic learners & reading/writing learners.
I believe I will be a shining beacon for aspiring pupils to pursue STEM subjects by inspiring them to see the potential use of mastering their subjects and applying them in their careers and futures.
