I am currently a training dentist working in Leicester. I have been tutoring from the age of 16 and enjoy helping students overcome their difficulties and the excel in their studies. Alongside teaching and studying I enjoy playing football and badminton. I have a particular interest in philosophy, and I love travelling. I can also say the alphabet backwards.
Prior to starting my degree, I have worked in the education sector where I performed the role of a Learning Support Assistant. To support myself through Sixth Form I also worked as a Tutor on a freelance capacity as well as for a local tuition centre.
Working in a busy tuition centre for 2 years led me to acquire the skills of effective time management. Catering for a number of students of varying academic abilities led me to adapt to their needs. I would use PowerPoints and diagrams to visually assist comprehension and a problem-based approach for those who learn through application of knowledge. Good lesson planning also made me aware of the need to have a systematic approach to my teaching and this produced successful outcomes, such as one of my students progressing from set 4 to set 2 in the space of 4 months. I enjoyed the fast pace environment I was in as this environment allowed me to thrive and achieve many objectives. Excellent organisation skills were key to manage the high expectations from parents and my employer.
During my gap year I undertook work as a Learning Support Assistant at Loxford Secondary School. Primary my role focussed on the support and care of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and those with disabilities. I would often teach such students on a one to one basis or in small groups. As each student with SEN is unique, I would have to adapt my approach in order to deliver the subject content in a suitable manner which could be easily understood.
I have also been freelance tutoring since the age of 16 and helping students on a one to one basis and in a group setting. As a result I have taught students from a diverse range of backgrounds and abilities.
I believe every student is unique and requires a different approach. Some prefer visual aids whilst others learn better by understanding the reasoning behind things rather than just memorising information. For example in maths, showing the proofs for equations can help the student retain the equation better in their memory. I adapt my approach as I learn about the needs of my student. I also adopt the scaffolding approach, where by I guide my students to the answer and help them reach a conclusion rather than just giving an answer. This helps the process of 'deep processing' as psychological studies have shown this form of learning helps the student retain information better.
