I have taught maths to students of all ages, and my approach is tailored to the needs of each student. I am good at finding out where a student is stuck, the underlying reasons for that, and the most effective way to develop the understanding necessary to achieve the grades they want.
I was awarded a distinction for part III of the Cambridge University mathematical tripos, and was then accepted for a PhD in maths, which I completed successfully in 1998. Since then I have taught maths through my whole career, as a postgrad student, as a postdoc researcher, as a private tutor and most recently as a teacher of GCSE, A level maths and further maths at a local school in Sussex.
My approach is exploratory, starting with a problem and asking questions to probe a student’s understanding, and then providing examples to help develop the necessary understanding. My aim is to develop confidence in maths, and in particular how to develop strategies for approaching novel problems that might be outside a student’s experience. With my private students and the students in school, I have good experience in helping them to achieve their desired grades, helping them to develop a scheme of work and revision, which topics to focus on, and to always be thinking of the bigger picture, considering what level of maths fits with their desires for a future career.
