Qualified physics teacher and experienced professional with a Ph.D. in physics.
Trained at a secondary grammar school and taught at a secondary academy. I am a career physicist with over 20 years of experience in industrial physics research working with companies around the world. I have a 1st class B.Sc. in physics and Ph.D. from the University of Leeds as well as a QTS and PGCE in secondary school physics education and an enhanced DBS certificate. After studying I worked at the University of Cambridge researching the physics of nanostructures. I then worked at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as a Principle Research Scientist for nearly 20 years. As part of this work, I was head of a group of scientists developing functional materials for novel sensing applications as well as new measurement techniques for International Standards. During this time, I was convenor of an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) committee working group developing new written standards for magnetic steels and alloys. After running my own physics consultancy for 3 years, I decided to become a teacher as I wanted to pass on my physics knowledge and experience to future generations.
An enjoyable role whilst working at NPL was producing interactive demonstrations for children for school open days. Seeing the spark of interest in science these produced is what my teaching is all about; when science is fun and engaging, learning becomes enjoyable. As physics is a conceptual subject, I use everyday experiences to teach the syllabus topics. In this way, students can have a context for what they learn, and my experience shows that this helps with understanding and recalling the content. As they progress through school, this core understanding is crucial for progression as more detail and new concepts are added. Using examples of where physics explains concepts in biology and chemistry helps with those subjects to.
