Hello! I’m Michael, a former Mechanical Engineer with a passion for helping students unlock their potential in Maths and Physics. After earning my master’s degree, I spent five years in an engineering consultancy, designing mechanical building services for the construction of new buildings and advising on energy efficiency to help achieve Net Zero goals.
Throughout my engineering and academic career, I always enjoyed mentoring others and supporting their academic journeys. Now, as a dedicated tutor, I find great joy in guiding students to develop confidence and understanding in Maths and Physics.
Over the past academic year, I’ve had the pleasure of tutoring students with a range of abilities from KS3 to GCSE, working with both mainstream and home-schooled learners. This experience has given me valuable insight into the different approaches required for each student, allowing me to tailor my teaching and lesson structure to their needs.
I am passionate about promoting the value of Maths and STEM learning - whether students are aiming for a future in these fields or simply want to build a strong foundation and an appreciation for the subject. My background in engineering allows me to bring real-world applications into my lessons, making learning more engaging and relevant.
In addition to tutoring, I have coached youth basketball for many years. This gave me an appreciation of how important positive reinforcement and encouragement is in building a young person’s confidence, an approach I bring into my tutoring.
My main goal as a tutor is to ensure students understand Maths and Physics, rather than trying to memorise what they need. I try to continually question how I break down topics, to ensure I am making it as understandable as possible for students.
I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable sharing their challenges, so we can tackle them together. I encourage students to take an active role in guiding what we do in lessons, by identifying areas where they need extra support, while also offering guidance and structured plans when needed - especially for home-schooled students or those unsure where to start.
Above all, I want my students to leave feeling like they’ve ‘cracked’ a topic and gained a bit more confidence in a subject, and I let this guide my approach throughout lessons!
