Online Computer Studies / I.T. Tutoring

Hello, my name is Melissa. I am a Computing teacher and currently head of department at a lovely school. Teaching has always been a passion of mine and I knew as soon as I left school that it was what I wanted to do. During my training and career I have completed many courses to enhance not only my subject knowledge but also my pedagogical teaching techniques.

I am an examiner for the OCR Computer Science GCSE as well as the BTEC in Digital Information technology. This also keeps me up to date with current examination process and content.

As well as teaching and running a department I also have 2 children of my own. In my spare time I like to spend time with my children, take our 2 lovely dogs for long walks and also run my own small design business.

I would love to pass on my knowledge as seeing other people learn is amazing.

Tutoring Experience

I have 14 years of teaching experience and I am a fully qualified teacher of Computer Science and Information Technology. I also have 7 years experience as an examiner.

I have a degree in both Computer Science and Education.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to teaching is a dynamic and adaptable that considers the diverse needs, learning styles, and backgrounds of students. While there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach, I like to consider the following:

Understanding Learners: Get to know my students individually. Understand their prior knowledge, learning styles, interests, and cultural backgrounds. This helps me tailor my teaching methods and content to engage and resonate with each student.

Clear Learning Objectives: I clearly define the learning outcomes I want us to achieve.
Engagement and Active Learning: I create an interactive and engaging learning environment. Incorporate activities that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, discussions, and hands-on experiences. Active participation enhances understanding and retention of information.

Effective Communication: I communicate concepts clearly and effectively. Use simple language, relevant examples, and visual aids to convey complex ideas. I encourage questions and discussions to foster a deeper understanding of the material.

Variety of Teaching Strategies: I utilise a diverse range of teaching strategies. Multimedia, case studies, experiential learning, demonstrations, role-playing, and technology to accommodate different learning preferences.

Scaffolding and Gradual Complexity: I start with foundational concepts and gradually increase the complexity of content. This helps build a strong knowledge base and confidence, preventing students from feeling overwhelmed.

Real-World Relevance: I try to relate the content to real-world applications and scenarios. This shows students how the concepts they're learning are relevant to their lives, careers, and broader society.

Adaptability and Flexibility: I am open to adjusting my teaching methods based on student feedback and changing circumstances. Flexibility allows me to cater to evolving needs and challenges.

Continuous Professional Development: I stay updated with the latest educational research, teaching techniques, and technologies. I engage in ongoing professional development to refine my teaching skills and incorporate new strategies.
