Maths Tuition in Bristol

Hi, I'm Matthew! I am a full-time A-Level Mathematics teacher with 5 years experience teaching in international Chinese high school. I have always found a joy in teaching others, even since my own school days where I would help my classmates, right up until now where I have made it my career.

Tutoring Experience

I have done tutoring work and teaching since 2012 in person and online. For the last 2 years have worked remotely to a Chinese school teaching A Level Maths and Further Maths and have developed the skills to get the most out of online teaching. My work has given me experience teaching students with a wide range of ability levels, and sometimes with students where there is a large language barrier. I have developed strategies for keeping explanations simple and easy to understand as a result, but with the capacity to explore topics deeper for students that want to look a step ahead.

Tutoring Approach

Tutoring is no replacement for a full time education, but it is ideal for strengthening any weaknesses a student may have, or filling in gaps in their knowledge. Identifying the areas that need attention is key and should be the start of any tutoring approach. Every student is different and needs assistance in different areas, I work with my students to figure out their specific needs and go from there.
Therefore the tutoring approach can vary from student to student, but generally sessions consist of a combination:
- Explaining new concepts or recapping material
- Working through examples step by step to show the process involved
- Applying concepts to real world examples to help increase interest in the material
- Exam practice with past papers and mark scheme analysis
- Feedback and goal setting to keep track of improvements (this can really help with students lacking confidence or motivation)
- Exam tips and strategies, focusing on material that is most likely to appear
