I am an easy going professional with over 30 years teaching, writing and examining experience who is highly organised and easy to get on with. With a PhD, Masters and teaching qualifications I am passionate about economics and teaching. I live in Bristol with my partner, two kids and a dog who all keep me grounded. I believe learning should be fun even if at times it can be hard work. Professionally I am passionate about economics and personal finance and get a buzz from seeing students flourish and succeed.
I have taught , written, assessed and coached economics and personal finance for over 30 years from GCSE to undergraduate. As well as writing textbooks and being an examiner at A Level, I have taught 16-18 year olds in the classroom and private tutoring to high levels of success. I have taught at School, College and currently a Senior Lecturer at the Open University Having written teaching materials and being a Senior Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy I understand the challenges faced in learning economics and have taught students with all abilities to succeed.
My approach is goals driven. By this I mean I explore what each student wants to achieve and create a unique plan to help them. I am very relaxed and informal and help students feel at ease so they can easily express what they are struggling with as well as what they can do. I am able to quickly assess strengths and weaknesses and work together in what is hopefully a fun and productive way to achieve goals. Economics is a great subject but one that is rather abstract at times, but helping students break through that barrier boosts confidence. I am very patient and supportive.
