Through my experience of teaching Civil Engineering at Imperial College London for the past 22 years, I have acquired both practical knowledge and the skills to teach students the principles of mathematics and their application. I cover all of the core mathematics of the syllabuses and I specialise in mechanics due to my engineering experience. My many years of teaching experience at university level has also allowed me to adapt my ways of teaching to the needs of the students way of learning to bring out their full potential. With that, I like to ensure that the students understands the techniques and principles rather than just memorising different methods. Having taught students of varying abilities, I am able to adapt my method of teaching to suit the students.

I am always described as very approachable and understanding of students problems, and given my practical engineering background I can normally always put the academic problem in some form of real world application. I have found that this approach better motivates students learning and understanding and helps to better motivate and stimulate students to develop a more inquisitive mind.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught mechanics, numerical methods and various aspects of mathematics encountered at Secondary school level to university students for over 25 years. During the last 4 years I have also been tutoring A level mathematics to sixth form students and year 11 GCSE students. I have a doctorate in civil engineering and can also teach mechanics and design up to this level.

Tutoring Approach

My approach has been to try and develop the students understanding of the principles rather than just memorising techniques as this helps them tackle a wide range of problems with more confidence. Having taught students of varying ability I am fairly adaptable to the students needs. I am described as very approachable by students and very patient. My real world understanding and use of mathematics means in many cases I can show some form of application which helps stimulate students.

As a university lecturer, I am also aware that students need to be able to develop the skill of 'learning to learn' as a university environment is very different to a school environment.
