Online English and French Teacher

Hi, I'm Lily. I grew up in France and am bilingual, and have just graduated from Cambridge University with a first class degree in Modern Languages, specialising in French, Russian, and French medieval languages. I also studied English literature, Latin and Spanish to A level.
I have extensive language teaching experience, having taught as a volunteer in several local primary schools, working on my year abroad from university as an Engligh language teaching assistant in France through the Erasmus+ programme, and working as a tutor for both English and French students ranging from primary school pupils to adults learning business English for the financial sector. I have also worked as a freelance translator.

At university, my primary focus alongside language learning was literature. In the past, I have worked on tragedy and gender in the 19th century French novel or the relationship between politics and literature in contemporary French fiction, in particular with regards to the works of novelist Faïza Guène for example. In my final year at university I specialised in medieval French literature, translating from Anglo-Norman, and exploring the Occitan love lyric of the troubadours for which I was awarded a faculty prize for the highest distinction in medieval languages.

I graduated with a first class degree, achieving a starred first and special excellence mention in French oral, and am a two-time college academic scholarship recipient.

Tutoring Approach

I would work with the student on developing the various skills needed to gain further fluency within the language, addressing speaking, listening, reading and writing. I have a thorough, disciplined and detailed approach to teaching - as a language teaching assistant in France, I taught 11 to 20 year olds every day and learnt how to adapt my teaching methods to individual student's needs. I am passionate about the French language and francophone culture, and would bring this to our lessons - be it through music, literature, history, current affairs etc... according to the student's own interests. Having learnt several languages myself, including Russian, Latin and Spanish, I am fully aware of the challenges of learning a language, but have also learnt how to take them on.
I am also able to tutor English language and literature up to A level standard, and Spanish up to GCSE standard.
