Hi, my name is Lewis and I am a Lecturer in Actuarial Science/Mathematics in the University of York, with particular expertise at probability theory, stochastic processes and statistics. I completed a PhD in Actuarial Mathematics and a Masters degree in Mathematics (First Class) at the University of Liverpool. Although my current position focuses on Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, my own education during my undergraduate and masters degrees covered a broad range of mathematical topics.
I am currently the module leader for a degree level actuarial mathematics course entitled: ‘Actuarial Modelling’ at the University of York. Prior to this position I have held two lecturing roles at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Liverpool where I have taught a number of courses, including: ‘Linear Statistical Modelling’, ‘Multivariate Statistics’, ‘Risk Theory’ and ‘Life Contingencies (Insurance)’. During my PhD studies I was employed as a general teaching assistant providing tuition for a broad range of mathematics modules, including pure mathematics, applied probability and financial/actuarial mathematics.
The way we learn and teach has changed dramatically over the last few years due to COVID-19, with a major shift to online teaching and reliance on virtual resources. That being said, due to the nature of the algorithmic techniques within mathematics, I still encourage a very practical approach which involves solving as many problems as possible until the method (and theory) are fully understood. In my opinion, simply being able to answer the question in order to pass an exam is not enough. By understanding the theory behind the problem, you build confidence in your abilities to tackle many different types of the problem, even if it deviates from the standard style of question.
