Laura

Private Maths and History Tutor in Ealing

Hi, I'm Laura, I am 23 years old and from London. I am a very friendly and kind person, and communicate clearly and patiently with students. I have previous experience working as a Maths Academic Tutor in a secondary school, supporting students ranging from year 7 to year 13 in maths. I am particularly good at working with students with low confidence and anxiety towards maths.

I have a first class History degree from Oxford University, and I have recently completed a Masters in Law at BPP Law School. For my A-Levels I studied Maths, Further Maths and History, receiving A* A* A. While I chose not to study Maths at university, I really love the subject and have built up lots of experience tutoring it.

In my spare time I love to spend time outdoors, bake, read novels and spend time with my friends and family!

Tutoring Experience

After my undergraduate degree in 2021, I worked for Seneca tutoring, where I provided one-to-one online tuition and answered students' questions on a Discord chat room.
In 2022 I spent 6 months working as a Maths Academic Tutor at the Langley Academy School. My role ranged from providing one-to-one maths support to students with special educational needs, to running breakout groups for GCSE students, and teaching A-Level revision sessions.
In the summer of 2023 I worked for Examberry tuition, making detailed explainer videos for Maths papers.
Over the last year and a half I tutored two students in GCSE maths. Since working with the students, their grades have significantly improved, as has their confidence in Maths.
Over the last year I have trained as a Mental Health First Aider, volunteered with the Refugee Council, and worked part time in a local café. All these experiences have strengthened my ability to communicate clearly, empathise and put people at ease, which is essential as a good tutor.

Tutoring Approach

When I first start working with students I like to build up a list of topics together that it will be most beneficial to focus on. I'll do this through discussing it with the student, looking at their school work, and doing some initial questions together.

When teaching a topic, I am a very methodical and try to break methods down into steps as much as possible. I like to teach using examples, talking through each of my steps. I am very interactive with students, and understand the importance of asking questions to keep students engaged. After a few examples, I encourage students to consolidate their knowledge through some practice questions. My experience in tutoring maths enables me to identify the points where students frequently go wrong, and point these out to students so they can be mindful of them.

If students are generally very strong, I find it useful for them to identify questions they have struggled with in their homework, and then work through those together. Additionally, it suits some students to go through topics they are learning in class at the time, and use our sessions to stretch to harder areas of the topic that they may not do in class.

My experience of working with a range of students at Langley Academy School means I understand the importance of maintaining flexibility in my approach to teaching. I stay aware of how much concentration a student seems to have, and change my approach if they lose focus. I create an environment where students are not self-conscious about asking questions or making mistakes, and emphasise the importance of this in the learning process. I have received feedback that my approach has been particularly valuable for students with anxiety around maths.
