Online English and French Teacher

I have just completed my First Year at the University of Oxford, going into Second Year in Modern Languages (French) and Linguistics. I completed the IB Diploma Programme at MLC School in Sydney, Australia, where I graduated as Dux.

Tutoring Experience

I was tutoring for a year in Sydney before coming to the UK for university, then assisting with the Italian IB oral classes at my old school, as well as tutoring on throughout the week in IB Biology (HL), Maths (SL), English (HL), French (HL), Italian (ab initio), and Theory of Knowledge. For three months in 2019, I was a live-in English tutor for an 11 year-old child in Germany, and thus have experience tutoring younger children as well.

Tutoring Approach

Having been on several language exchanges to France, Italy, and Germany, I have learnt first-hand the importance of active engagement in learning, whether it be a new language or knowledge acquisition in general. Thus, in my past experience as a private tutor, I have endeavoured to adapt my approach to the individual student, first gaging which style of learning suits them best, then working out a method that is most effective for the individual student. In learning a foreign language, practice is essential, and gaining confidence in the oral component of language learning is prioritised in tutoring sessions. Some students, of course, struggle most with grammar, in which case we would talk through this (and if the student feels comfortable, in the language itself!). Academically, practice is key, and I would encourage students in English to bring in essays that they have worked on, and we would break them up analytically to see what could be improved, diverging onto general techniques or background knowledge that would prove fruitful to the course. Aside from what has been outlined above, however, my approach is generally individualistic, as I recognise the varying needs of different students, and it is important to find a suitable method that is both engaging and effective for the student.
