Hello, my name is Katherine. I've worked with children and young people as a tutor and as an Education Worker. I am passionate about supporting young people to feel confident and empowered in their capabilities and to enjoy learning!
As well as supporting the development of academic ability, I am motivated to improve the overall learning experience and confidence of learners. Learning should be accessible to everyone and I strive to create fun and positive learning environments that suit the needs of those I work with.
In terms of my own academic experience, I have a degree in History (2:1) from the University of a Birmingham and have been working in education and outreach for the last seven years. I currently work in outreach within the conservation sector, where I link much of my work to the curriculum in Wales to inspire young people to connect with the natural world. I am starting my PGCE in 2025 to become a qualified Primary Teacher.
I'm based in Brecon but am very happy to travel to meet in person or deliver sessions online.
In terms of my tutoring experience, I have supported primary aged learners with their maths and literacy skills, secondary students with GCSE Maths and English and A level learners with English Literature.
Alongside this, I have 13 years experience of supporting primary and secondary learners as tutor and Education and Outreach worker in various educational settings. This has included providing academic support to primary learners, secondary learners and students with diagnosed/undiagnosed special educational needs. I have also provided extensive support to learners in Y11 - 13 with applications for jobs, apprenticeships and university and supporting them with developing skills for the workplace.
When working with learners, I aim to develop confidence and subject understanding whilst delivering an enjoyable learning experience.
A main priority is to develop genuine, positive working relationships with learners to ensure they are comfortable and feel happy in our sessions. To do this, I tailor my approach to every student and take into consideration learning needs, experiences, interests and attitudes to learning to help plan engaging and enjoyable sessions that are relevant and accessible.
I make learning as fun as possible and really enjoy linking curriculum content in the context of learner interests and other topics. Therefore sessions can be interactive, practical and creatively linked to different themes e.g. nature/sport/cooking/engineering/entrepreneurship- sitting as a desk with worksheets alone can be hard work!
To develop the confidence of learners, I actively encourage risk taking, asking questions (especially when they don't feel they know!) and for learners to take a lead over their own learning to encourage accountability and independence. I have access to online resources and can plan bespoke resources and projects based on subjects identified by learners that develop various skillsets.
Please do get in touch if you have any questions!
