Hello! I am Kamlesh and I am a Structural Engineer by profession. I graduated from Newcastle University with a First Class honours and with excellent marks in all pure maths / engineering mathematics modules.
For the last 10 years, I have been working as a part-time maths tutor who believes in bringing out natural prowess for maths and accelerating learning for pupils studying KS1, KS2, KS3 and GCSE. I believe these are the key development years and with the right level of patience, effort and dedication, I have seen all of my students do well in the subject.
In year 10, I was predicted a grade D in maths for GCSEs. Having a good tutor helped me achieve a grade A in a matter of 18 months. Having been through the process myself, I am confident that most people have reasonable mathematical potential.
Starting as a GCSE student myself, I mentored younger pupils, teaching Key Stage 1-2 in school and throughout college. During my professional career, I have taught over 100+ students from both state and grammar schools, where I have always succeeded in improving peak performance in dedicated students for Mathematics.Working part time at Clever Tutors and Kumon throughout the last decade, I have placed a heavy focus on training KS1 - KS3 and GCSE students in improving their raw mathematics scores. My most proud moments relating to improving overall scores in children who were told that they were not 'mathematically oriented', and this is what I enjoy the most; bringing out the natural mathematical ability in people.
The first mistake tutors make is to think that by teaching mathematics, they are teaching pupils to 'solve problems'. As humans, we are all natural problem solvers, and mathematics is just one of the languages to help solve certain problems. Therefore, the key is to learn the language and its functions, followed by the use of language to practice problem solving. As competence improves, I will gradually increase the difficulty of problems. The core of my work is to bring out the confidence in students and manage the learning process over time.
As a parent(s), you and I will have an initial chat about your goals and your child’s current mathematical ability and personality.
Following this, I monitor the first session by assessing the student’s current competence level, focus level and motivation towards the subject. This is also monitored further throughout the tutoring process. Subsequently, I will strategise material learning within the timeframe we have to achieve the desired goals.
Being a people’s person naturally, I am relatively quick in bringing a student willingly on track to achieving the main goal. Whilst this is true, I am also accommodating of students that show high ability and want to progress further in the subject.
