Personal Description:

I am pursuing a PhD in Education and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham where I also teach EAP (English for Academic Purposes). I live in Buxton (Derbyshire) and am bilingual in English and Italian having lived, worked, and studied in both the UK and Italy, and having been brought up bilingually at home. I also went to a European School where Italian was the first language of instruction (I have a European Baccalaureate with Italian as first language, French as second, and English as third; I also took exams in philosophy). My French is fluent, and I have some basic knowledge of German, all of which have heightened my awareness of the role that language plays in education. I have an MA in Philosophy, an MA in Education, and am a qualified teacher of EAP. I am also an External Examiner for NCUK (Northern Consortium of Universities based in Manchester). I live in Buxton (Derbyshire), but work part-time in Nottingham.

Tutoring Experience:

Most recently, since 2008, I have been teaching at Nottingham University's School of Education where I tutor and lecture in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and Academic Writing. Before this, I taught EAP, ESOL, and Adult Literacy at the University of Derby (in Buxton and Derby) for 3 years. I moved to the UK from Italy in 2005 where, since 1995, I had been teaching academic English and translating academic articles for the University of Padova. I also taught Business English for Benetton Group, Aprilia Motors, and Diesel Clothing.

Tutoring Approach:

With 22 years of teaching experience, several teaching qualifications (inc. City and Guilds ESOL Level 4, a PGCTEAP at Level 7), and my own continuing education (as I do my PhD, Level 8), my approach to tutoring is that teaching and learning cannot be separated and that the tutor-student relationship is one in which each has to learn from the other and trust the other to be committed to the teaching-learning process. This means that as a teacher, my first priority is to get to know you and understand what motivates you to learn so that I can establish the best way to engage your attention. I am also aware that there are times when we (as students) simply have to get through an exam or assignment and that intrinsic motivation (i.e. a personal passion or intrinsic interest) can be low. My approach to teaching and learning in such cases of low commitment is to work with you to create a motivational spark and establish clear strategies for retaining information. In terms of teaching methods, I can draw on my knowledge of various approaches (e.g. task-based, communicative, text analysis) but these will vary and will depend on how you process information, what we are trying to understand, and the purpose of our tutorial.
