Judit

English Tuition in Bexley

Welcome! I'm Judit, a dedicated and passionate English tutor committed to helping students unlock their full potential, or get that passing grade they need to progress with their life. With 7 years of experience in tutoring, I've had the privilege of working with a diverse range of learners, from those struggling to grasp foundational concepts to high achievers aiming for academic excellence.

I’m deeply passionate about literature and learning and I strive to infect my students with the same enthusiasm. Whether it's through engaging discussions, hands-on activities, or curated resources, my goal is to make learning enjoyable and rewarding.

An avid reader and a lifelong learner, I strongly believe in the transformational power of education. I was incredibly lucky to have instrumental mentors and educators who, through their nurturing and dedication, instilled a profound love for the written word in me. I’ve spent the past 7 years of my tutoring career constantly setting my methods against those influential benchmarks I have learned to appreciate.

Tutoring Experience

With an average of 20 new students every year since 2017, I have met a wide range of personalities and needs. I have worked with students from the autistic spectrum, ADHD boys who fidgeted throughout the lesson and girls who were hyper-focused for a staggering 60 minutes. I had students who had brilliant ideas and were excellent at talking about them, but when it came to writing, they struggled to put together a single coherent sentence. I’ve had students who would rather chat through the hour than do any work (a sure sign of avoidance rooted in fear of failure), and students who barely say a word.

I never had two students who were even remotely similar and that's the beauty of the tutoring profession. Each student brings their unique set of strengths and struggles – my role is to help them use the former to cope with the latter.

Tutoring Approach

Three steps to a personalised learning plan:
I always start with a comprehensive assessment of the student's current level, individual needs, and particular learning style. Identifying areas of strength and weaknesses allows me to create a unique learning profile which consists of their existing knowledge, their challenges, their areas of ease, and their personal interests.

Armed with this information, I perform a detailed gap analysis, comparing their current skill level with the expected standards and benchmarks. This step highlights specific areas where intervention is needed, and it allows me to tailor my approach accordingly.

With a clear understanding of the student's strengths and weaknesses, I create a personalised learning plan which addresses their individual needs. This plan is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a tailored roadmap that leverages their strengths to bring up areas of weakness. For example, if a student shows a knack for creative writing but struggles with analysing texts, I devise exercises and activities that use their creative abilities to refine their analytical skills. By focusing on their strengths, I create a supportive learning environment that encourages growth and confidence.

Three tools of success:
Central to this approach is examples and model answers that showcase what good looks like. I firmly believe that providing students with examples they can use to write their own answers is crucial – how could they aspire to greatness if they have never seen it? I guide my students through each question, letting them do the first attempt but always staying present to jump in if they have a question – feeling alone in the face a challenge they know they should be able to tackle is incredibly discouraging and contributes to low self-esteem, so I never let them feel like they are left to their own devices.

Analysing the mark scheme is also often overlooked which is a shame because it allows the student to understand what they get the marks for. I often let my students do this exercise themselves: after they have completed an answer to an exam style question, I give them the mark scheme and ask them to do what teachers do during the marking process. Adults often underestimate young people’s critical thinking skills, but in my experience, students are uncannily spot on with their assessment of their own work.

The final great enabler is feedback. Two things are true to answers with no feedback: the student wasted time under the pretence of practice while gaining zero tangible learning outcome. We make mistakes all the time, but if we are not given the tools to understand and correct them, growth is stifled and apathy sets in. Constant, constructive, and comprehensive feedback is the basis of empowering students to take ownership of their learning.
