This is how 2 referees rated Joseph:
My names Joe and I've been a professional guitar player for 30 years. When I was 14 yrs old I took guitar lessons with Brendan McCormack at The Bluecoat chambers in Liverpool.I studied Jazz/ Classical /Blues and Popular guitar, plus other roots based styles.Brendan gave me the tools and showed me how to be a well rounded musician who can be part of a group or play as a soloist.A few years later I became very interested in the music business side of things too and started my own record label T.K.O records.I played with many different and diverse groups during that time people like The Stranglers, P.J Proby, The Drifters,Willie Harris, Matchbox, the list just goes on. I've done Television work and been a regular radio session player on most of the big stations in the Northwest.I had the good fortune to go over an work in New York as a house musician at Arlene's Grocery in the East village Manhattan. I'm a working musician, I travel around the country as a session player and in doing so I've met a lot of fantastic musicians who have passed on tips and tricks of the trade that I believe only a working musician can teach.
I started teaching when I was 25 yrs old. I was doing arts based workshops teaching young people and doing learning groups for the unemployed. They were all at different levels of ability but they were all working towards NVQs in music and drama.I was also teaching privately, mainly after schools tuition with younger children. I have kept to teaching privately over the last few years as I get more satisfaction watching a student develop at their own level.
It's always been about making the lessons fun and getting the tutee to feel relaxed, then we can start looking at ability and which direction to take the lessons. For most adults and children it's really a case of starting at the basics, motor skills, getting those fingers moving. This takes time but being patient and giving encouragement really does pay off.I find you get more from a student if you take small steps and don't blind them with science. If they have a certain musician they like you can always add part of this to the lesson.Maybe just learning the basic chords used in a favorite song can help bring a student on just a little bit more.I've always been very flexible in regards to where the lessons are given. Some people feel that being in their own home is a better and more relaxed atmosphere for them. While other people prefer to come to my home as they feel distracted being around their family. So I do both kinds of lesson, at my home or I'll do house visits for no extra cost, but we can talk about that when we discuss the lessons.
